I was at the track the other morning beginning my mile...as I made my way around the track I saw a father and his two sons ( they were black). I slowed down to observe them because immediately I thought of the most recent events of the killings of black men by police. I was near tears and slowed down even more to watch the young man and his sons. We spoke to each other with a smile and a wave. He began instructing them on stretching exercises before they practiced for whatever he was preparing them for.
I began to pray and thank God for their lives and most importantly for the father who got his sons up EARLY in the morning ( it wasn't even 7:30am yet!) in the Summer to do some training. So I was praying and making my way around the track and began to think.
Besides the prayer of , "Lord, cover the father who is instructing his sons early this morning...and help the sons to remember this day and may they continue to bond in years to come." I began to wonder about what other lessons this father will instruct, guide and teach his BLACK sons.
Although they were out stretching and running the track and field, will the father train them on how to RUN this race in life?
There was an older son and a younger son...the older son was more trained and from my observation had natural skill and talent to run faster with great shape and form. For the most part, he worked out on his own with the encouragement of his father. However, the youngest son had a bit of a challenge, yet the father stayed with him throughout each workout. The father remained with the younger son even though he was not as fast. I watched the father cheer and encourage both sons just the same at the same time. While the oldest ran the whole football field, he remained with the youngest son running the filed until he reached each end.
Joy filled my heart in the midst of its grief...yet I pray and still wonder, will the sons know how to RUN this race that's at war with their race in the days, months, and years to come? Will they have the training necessary to know when to apply what they have been taught? Will the one who is more skilled use his feet to walk the pavement in arms of the ones who are still struggling like his younger brother?
Will the father of these sons not only instruct his sons, but the sons of many mothers who may be fatherless?
Will the the sons have cheers and applause for more than just being excellent at a sport? Will they ever be celebrated and praised because of their academics and not as a threat because of their skin color?
All of these questions came to mind, but one thing remained as God began to bring peace...as long as THE FATHER is present, everything is going to be alright.
The sons I saw engaged with their father are going to be alright...and as a people, as a community, as a country, as a family, as a human being, I encourage YOU to know, as long as the THE FATHER is present, WE are going to be alright. He will continue to guide and instruct us on HOW to RUN this race of life. He will give us everything we need to fulfill our mission and purpose, because LIFE is not over, the race is not given to the swift nor to the strong, but to the one that endures to the end.
All Love and Peace,
